Scooters vs. Mopeds-what’s the difference?

Author:John Van Schaik

There is nothing like going to work with the fresh, early morning air blowing by as the sun is rising and the fresh smell of flowers fills the air!  If you’re new to the outdoor mobile lifestyle, you are probably confused as to what would be the best vehicle to save you money at the pump and, at the same time, meet your other requirements.  We did some investigation and here are the facts:

Mopeds: Engines may not exceed 50 cubic centimeters (ccs) in size with an automatic transmission, or 130 ccs in size, if it is a bicycle-type vehicle with fully operative pedals for propulsion by human power. They may not be driven over 30 mph in many states. They can be driven on city streets (35 mph or less). On roads with speed limits of 55 mph or less, they have to be driven on the shoulder. They can't be driven on roads over 55 mph.  To operate mopeds, you only need a standard driver’s license and it must be registered (license plate) with the DMV.

Scooters: Scooters have no limit on speed, engine size or power rating - there are scooters as large as 650cc that can achieve speeds over 100 mph.  To operate them, a motorcycle license is required, as well as vehicle registration and insurance.  They can be driven on roads up to 55 mph, but must be driven on the shoulder on roads with maximum speed limits that are over 55 mph.

Aside from the differences in power, usage and insurance, the positive benefits they both share are:

  • Easy maneuverability and parking in urban environments

  • Gas mileage in excess of 60 mpg on some models

  • No insurance on mopeds and usually very reasonable insurance on scooters

In addition to being a very viable and economic transportation decision, you will find yourself running out more often for some fresh groceries for the evening’s meal and actually returning with a smile on your face!  You owe it to yourself to try out these great new fun rides.  Who knows, you may actually begin to enjoy your commute to and from work!
